Printing Housing On Demand

This research project investigates how design may tackle urgent urban issues such as elevated rents and extended commutes by reimagining housing for students and workers in Bangalore City.

Bangalore, recognized for its swift expansion and significant congestion, is experiencing escalating housing expenses and a scarcity of residences near primary employment centers. The study examines how compact living solutions might reconcile affordability, sustainability, and quality of life.

Utilizing advancements in 3D printing, locally sourced materials, and principles of sustainable urbanism, the project proposes a dwelling type that is rapid to construct, economically viable, and ecologically responsible. The project is guided by theoretical frameworks including Space Syntax, Sustainable Design Principles, and Human-Centered Design, highlighting the influence of location, layout, and user experience on human engagement with constructed settings.

The result comprises three principal design explorations, each addressing a particular urban issue:

Commute-Free Living advocates for tiny dwellings strategically located near Bangalore's principal IT firms and educational establishments, minimizing commute duration while decreasing transportation expenses and emissions.

3D-Printed Architecture utilizes additive manufacturing using a singular locally obtained material to fabricate each micro home unit, guaranteeing consistency, resilience, and reduced building waste.

Self-Contained Living Units amalgamate all requisite spaces—an independent kitchen, bathroom, sleeping area, study area, and storage—within a compact configuration. Each piece is constructed from identical materials to ensure a unified appearance and cost-effectiveness, providing occupants with autonomy and seclusion within a compact space.

The initiative posits that housing extends beyond just shelter to foster meaningful, sustainable, and convenient lifestyles. By integrating technology, design thinking, and urban planning, it reconceptualizes how compact living may augment productivity, alleviate stress, and promote comfort in Bangalore City.
