Encounter is a multidisciplinary and multi sensory approach to nature learning. Combining the benefits of both physical paper media and technology to teach primary school children between 8-11 years, this project addresses the necessity of equipping children with adequate skills to engage with their local environment in the current climate crisis.
The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) predicted in 2018 that we would hit 1.5 degrees of warming from pre-industrial levels, between 2030-2052. We officially hit 1.5 degrees in 2024, much earlier than anticipated. The global climate crisis is more urgent than ever, and with that a multidisciplinary approach must be taken to prioritise environmental regeneration. This project seeks to address this issue, making environmental learning fun and engaging with visual communications as the catalyst.
This project consists of printed cards, and a digital app companion. Playing cards ask the student to use their senses (sight, touch and sound) to navigate their local environment, whether they live in a rural or urban setting. As a companion activity, the accompanying app adds another dimension of learning, by identifying bird sounds, using AR to improve nature vocabulary, and other facts of nature presented in an engaging way.
To be used together or separately, the teacher has full autonomy on how to conduct the activity, and is equipped with a full teacher’s handbook with a glossary, worksheets and a how-to guide.
This project uses visual communications as a tool to address a gap in the current curriculum, and aims to equip younger generations with environmental knowledge to give them autonomy over their future on this earth and its protection.
