Work on Water 2025 is a design research initiative that tackles the pressing issue of youth unemployment in Kerala by suggesting an innovative floating incubation hub on the state's renowned backwaters.
Notwithstanding Kerala's elevated literacy rate, numerous graduates encounter underemployment, migration pressures, and skill mismatches. This idea proposes a multipurpose, biophilic office hub that promotes entrepreneurship, self-employment, and innovation, inspired by Kerala’s cultural legacy and biological environment.
The floating workspace is designed as more than a co-working office; it incorporates mentorship programs, skill-based training, and community networking within a sustainable, flexible setting. The hub integrates renewable energy sources, rainwater harvesting, passive cooling, and biophilic design elements, thereby aligning with sustainable development goals and creating a healing environment that promotes mental health and productivity. The design draws inspiration from Kerala’s traditional houseboat architecture, merging indigenous aesthetics with modular, scalable building methods for future adaptability.
The project establishes the hub as a hybrid environment attractive to local youth, eco-tourists, and global digital nomads, converting Kerala’s backwaters into a venue for cultural exchange, creativity, and resilience. It examines how floating buildings might integrate human activity with delicate ecosystems while acting as a model for climate-responsive design in flood-prone areas. Ultimately, Work on Water 2025 serves as a social and environmental initiative, reinterpreting workspaces as arenas of cultural identity, ecological awareness, and youth empowerment.
