Constructing Reality on YouTube

“Constructing Reality on YouTube” is a design research project focused on creating an adaptable backdrop for amateur YouTubers, who often work alone and record videos in limited spaces. These creators need to maintain privacy while keeping the audience engaged.

As media platforms evolve, there's growing demand for flexible video setups and quick responses to trends. This study explores design solutions that enhance content and support audience growth, while reducing the effort needed to create a new background for each video. It examines whether a single 3D design can serve as a branded and adaptable solution for creators with varying needs.
The design is based on folding and pop-up techniques, coloured background lighting, and considerations of YouTube’s algorithm. The goal was to create a simple, cost-effective backdrop that’s easy to set up, adjust, and store, yet still delivers a strong on-camera visual effect, similar to professional setups. To support the design process, the study involved a historical review of set design, analysis of visual and non-visual literature, case studies of Greek YouTubers, material experimentations and prototyping.
The final outcome is a paperboard backdrop branded as “3 Folds”, lightweight, affordable, and easy to manufacture. Its foldable design allows it to close completely and store. The front side of the backdrop features central or side coloured lighting. The lighting colours were selected after analysing YouTube's algorithm and current content trends. The back is left open for personalization. However, it can also be customized by the designer upon request. The idea is to give creators the freedom to adapt the panels to their own style and content, whether by attaching fabrics, graphics or wallpaper with the hook and loop tape along the edges, or by adding props. This way, the panels can evolve with their needs and even be used as a video thumbnail.
